Odd Meters

In this drum workshop, in addition to an extensive exercise program for technology, coordination, groove and time, Indian rhythm concepts for mastering extended time signatures and for perfecting solo and groove potential are developed. Another focus is the application of West African rhythms to the drum set, which Gernot learned during a three-month stay in Ghana, West Africa, with the Ewe tribe.

The Role of the Drummer from
Be-bop to Modal Jazz

In this drum workshop we will develop authentic Be-Bop Groove and corresponding solo material by Philly Joe Jones and Max Roach. We will deal with drum solos on the form of various jazz standards from yesterday to today and realize our individual musical ideas with rudiments and jazz vocabulary on the drum set.

Planet Percussion

In this class we will learn how to play easy-to-follow rhythms from Africa and India in a group setting. We will play an African hand drum called “djembe”. Just like when we have a conversation with our friends, we will learn how to “talk and converse” with our drums. We will play rhythmic games and explore different percussion instruments such as shakers, bells, bongos and many more. We will also try out drum sticks on buckets and other surfaces fit for percussive exploration.
